Creepy Creations from the Crypt…

Welcome to my spook-tacular showcase of crafty creations and boo-tiful creep-sakes! Okay, Halloween puns over with because I have no more left in me…or do I…ooooooOOOOOoooohhhh!!!

I love Halloween for scary films and spooky decor yet it’s only over the last few years that I have begun to create spooky items for our home – shock, horror!

Unless I am very much mistaken these items above are my only non-fabric creations and I do love them. I went through a phase of thinking I could sculpt items out of polymer clay and after making a few houses I realised my sculpting prowess was not the best, so my polymer clay sits in a box, patiently waiting for me to get a burning desire to try again someday!

My most recent creation was my BOO bunting that I had fun making one afternoon and it hangs in my craftroom.

And then we have crocheted pumpkins…I have mannnny many more than what you see here and I have them in lots of colours. I used to sell them on Etsy and was surprised by how many people shared my love for crocheted colourful pumpkins. I have a pink collection in my craftroom staring at me right now as I write this. I wrote my own patterns for them and have refined them a few times over the years to create different shapes and styles of pumpkins. As you can probably tell, I am rather passionate about crocheted pumpkins!!

And now we move on to fabric creations…until last year I had never even purchased any Halloween-themed fabric and then I fell in love with a few prints from Lewis and Irene’s many Halloween lines they design.

As always, it seems to be The Sewing Studio who have a ‘Deal of the Week’ sale that drags me in and takes my focus from one project and onto designing another, based around fabrics I never even knew I wanted – until I saw a cheaper price displayed on their shiny website!

And here are those fabrics, modelled by an unbelievably handsome and distinguished gentleman! There were 13 half-metre cuts and I bit the bullet and instantly cut them into 2½” strips as I had seen a tutorial on Instagram for a free Moda pattern that I knew would be perfect for these prints.

At this point I still had some work to do on getting my ¼” seam more accurate but practise makes perfect, right?

Here is my finished quilt, it’s big, I haven’t measured it but think it’s about 60″x80″.

I didn’t manage to get a full photo, sorry! My husband’s arms were ready to buckle this day so just imagine it double this height! I bound it with a black and white striped polycotton and it really goes well with the look. The backing is a black and white polycotton I got from one of the pound-a-metre online shops a few years ago as toile fabric for some dressmaking patterns. I got about 20 metres for £10 so there was plenty to spare for this.

The texture of the grid quilting is lovely. It was the first quilt I quilted on my Brother industrial sewing machine and I was pleasantly surprised at the finish of it. I used a black cotton thread and it stands out just the right amount.

I had 4 spare blocks when I finished this quilt so I made a matching quilt for my little furry angels to relax on…

I hand-quilted this one with black Perle thread and bound it with a few of the left-over 2½” strips. The backing is the same as the main quilt.

Both quilts have been extremely well-used over the past year and as such, have both been washed repeatedly and only get more boo-tiful with each wash!

And even after 2 quilts there were still 20 strips of the Halloween fabric left so I made a Jelly Roll rug.

This too has been washed and dried many times over and is still gorgeous and flat. It gets very furry as the cats love sleeping on it in our bedroom, so we sweep over it with the silicone brush to remove the fur and it comes up a treat.

The last few scraps of fabric went into scrappy coasters I gave to a friend and the triangles left-over from joining the strips in the rug created a little mini quilt/wall-hanging for my craftroom.

I haven’t even told you yet but some of the fabrics are glow-in-the-dark!!! Oh my word it is so amazing when they begin glowing at night, and when the main quilt is folded on our shelf I have gotten spooked many times into thinking we have a radioactive spider staring back at me!!

So that’s it, what do you think?

Do you like Halloween crafts?

Are you a polymer clay pro…unlike me!?!

Happy Halloween, stay safe and happy stitching everyone x
